"Small steps, great accomplishments." ( Finding yourself)

Lists.

For some of us absolutely beneficial, for some of us silly and unnecessary.

A couple years ago, I created my first goal list. It was a recommendation of my friend, who convinced me to start one.

What does Megan want to do when she grows up? – My first thoughts to this list: “What the heck?! This is too silly, I’m too old for this anyway”.

I clearly wasn’t a fan of this list idea and thought it is silly to write down all the things I ever dreamed of doing. I mean, I can’t do it all anyway, right?!

Well, it depends. I created this list and payed attention to it the first couple of weeks. I started working on some things that I thought I could work on in that moment. I started with getting my guitar fixed, so that I can finally learn how to play the guitar. It was a great idea, but in the end, it didn’t work out. Here we are again, we can’t do it all anyway, right?!

FALSE. That was just one of many things on that list. The truth is, you can’t do everything at the same time. In my case, it just wasn’t the right time to start with the guitar, since I left the country soon afterwards.

If we want to start working on a list like that and fulfill our dreams, we need to prioritize. What is most important for me right now?

Also, we need to realize that what we want to achieve, doesn’t always turn out the way we picture it. For example: If your dream is to be a gardener once in your life, doesn’t mean that it has to be your main profession. Maybe you will be a gardener, taking care of your own garden, your neighbours garden, or do it on the weekends as a side gig, next to your other profession.

As time went by and I started my first year as an Au Pair in the US, I started forgetting about this list a little. I got back into dance, which was a very important point on that list, but kind of forgot about the rest. I kept on living, exploring and experiencing. I tried out many things during my time in the US, which helped me grow and figure out what I actually want in life. Without anyone who has been close to me and has been years around me, I started living, without being influenced by other people’s opinions. I was just “doing me”. Besides that, I became much braver than I was before. I found myself participating at open mics, at dance battles, going to new cities by myself. I had the most interesting conversations with strangers. I met people from different states, made new friends, started reading new and different books. This is what helped me grow and discover a lot of things about myself. Simply by doing things.

There is a quote, I started living by, that says “Action cures fear”. This quote is so meaningful to me, because it is, in my opinion, very true. In order to get rid of your fears, you need to just do the things you are afraid of. Back to my list – there were many things on that list, that I thought I couldn’t do. Like I said, I completely forgot about that list after a while, but I found it somewhere a couple months ago and what I saw surprised me a lot. Even though I didn’t think about it, I somehow accomplished a lot of the goals I wrote down. They must have been still in the back of my head. I felt happy and proud when I saw that list and saw what I accomplished. Not just because I accomplished it, but because I was surprised what I was able to do, after believing for a long time, that I couldn’t.  Action truly cures fear.

Taking action might be scary sometimes, but in the end, it is worth it to overcome what’s stopping you, which in most cases is fear. You can do it too. I now know that we can all achieve these things on our secret goal lists, that we’ve been hiding somewhere and if we take a small step of action, we can all accomplish more, than we ever thought we could. And if we, while we are doing it, or even before we are doing it, believe that we can, we will probably accomplish even more.

Why don’t you start today? Give it a try. Start your own goal list, start working on something you always wanted to do, take action.

I would be more than happy to read about your goals, or experiences, or even talk to you about it. Just leave me a message on my Instagram account, or send me an e-mail.
